How it began

A question that landed somewhere deep.

Sister & Sewn began during a season of grief. In 2024, after the loss of their grandmother, two sisters found their way back to making with their hands.

Cassidy, a clinical psychologist, has long been drawn to the stories people carry and the quiet ways we connect to design: the colors that feel familiar, the textiles that recall a place, and the objects that make a room feel like home—often before we can explain why. Grief sharpened that attention and made the desire to create something lasting feel more urgent.

Their grandmother had built a beautiful home and a restaurant business with almost nothing. She believed that the spaces we create for people matter—that a room can make someone feel at home before a single word is spoken. That belief stayed with them.

Cassidy signed up for a sewing class at Urban Spools in Dallas. Too impatient to wait, she bought a machine and began teaching herself after the kids were asleep. She called her sister Tara in Washington, D.C. Tara bought a machine that same week. Across a thousand miles, they learned together—trading photos, mistakes, ideas, and small victories over text.

As their small practice grew, so did their curiosity. They began to see how often exceptional textiles, inherited materials, and independent artists’ work became separated from the stories, process, and people that gave them meaning.

They also began to recognize a gap: makers and heritage brands with extraordinary work, and a design community eager to discover it, were not always finding one another.

That realization expanded Sister & Sewn beyond what they made by hand. It became a way to champion artists, keep stories close to the work, and create thoughtful paths for both new collections and storied materials to move forward.

Out of grief, two new machines, and a shared instinct to make something lasting, Sister & Sewn was born. What began at a sewing table has grown into a platform for the artists, materials, and stories we believe deserve to be seen.

What began at a sewing table has grown into a house that brings global makers, storied materials, and thoughtful U.S. production to the American design trade. We work directly with artists, heritage brands, and collection partners — keeping their stories close to the work and creating considered paths for both new collections and one-of-a-kind materials to move forward.

We champion the artists, materials, and stories we believe deserve to be seen.

This fall, that work arrives as The Founding Collection — a first roster of exceptional makers and design houses, presented by Sister & Sewn in New York. It is the fullest expression yet of the idea we started with: that beautiful things carry meaning, and that meaning is worth keeping close.
